Check and consolidate sound/symbol correspondences for all letters of the alphabet including common 2- and 3-letter consonant blends and long and short vowel sounds.
Cursive handwriting
Simple prefixes and suffixes
Simple spelling rules such as when to use -ss, -ll, -zz; c, k or ck; v or ve; s, z or zz
Syllable division patterns: vc/cv, v/cv, v/v and vc/v
Reading and spelling words, sentences and passages within the structure of the course
Generating sentences and passages with the correct grammar and appropriate punctuation
Familiarity with word processing
Choices for long vowel sounds such as a, a-e, ai, ay
Suffixing rules: double the final consonant, drop e, change y to i
Digraphs such as or, ar, er
More complex spelling choices such as or, ore, oar, oor; j, ge, dge
Regular final syllables such as -tion, -ture and the -le syllables
Reading, discussion, prediction and summary of stories and factual passages
